Real Weddings: Allie & Rafe’s Day, Their Way

So its nearly the weekend so we thought we would treat you, as usual, to another beautiful Real Wedding.  This week we give you Allie and Rafe, shot by the wonderful Andrew at Silverbirch Photography. Oooooh its so so lovely! The attention to detail, the venue, her coy smile, those shoes, his tweed, their little boy! I shall stop banging on about it and leave it to you to discover instead.  Over to Allie and Rafe to tell us all about their day……

Real Weddings: Allie & Rafe’s Day, Their Way

What was your budget?

We didn’t really have a set budget in mind. We knew we could only spend what we had so worked with that. We decided what was a need and what was a want then priced everything up. That sounds really boring I know but it really worked for us. Our rule of thumb was ‘does it sound reasonable’, if it did then we went for it. We had all the needs then had a few nice splurges too!

All together I’d say just under £7000 in total.

How would you describe your wedding theme?

The whole thing was perfect from start to end. My favourite part was how relaxed everyone felt. It was a casual laid back day with our closest family and friends. We were able to be ourselves and so were our guests. No pretending and no drama. Rafe was able to perform wuthering heights with the boys, the dance as well as the singing, I over indulged in Jagerbombs and no body batted an eyelid. Our families and friends mingled like they had all known each other for years.

I also loved seeing Rafe and our little boy Dylan dressed in the same outfit. It made my heart melt seeing him in his miniature tweed coat and brogues.

Tell us about your Wedding Dress

I didn’t step foot in a wedding dress shop. It just didn’t appeal to me at all. I knew I didn’t want a traditional dress and I knew trying on dresses in a shop just wasn’t for me. I initially chose a vintage Ivory embroidered full length gown but I just didn’t feel comfortable and didn’t feel like myself. In the end I went for a Chi Chi London lace baroque tea dress from ASOS. It was a bargain but I felt really special in it and more importantly felt like me.

IMG_7793 IMG_7896

I was actually more bothered about my shoes! I didn’t like traditional wedding shoes and knew I wanted something colourful. I found the most amazing burgundy shoes on Mod Cloth and instantly ordered them, they were perfect.

IMG_7803 IMG_8018

Who did you pick as your bridesmaids &/or best man and why?

I chose my two best friends, Bobbie and Becci and my Cousin, Jess. Even though we have spent long periods of time miles apart and sometimes go weeks without talking and months without seeing each other they are three of the most important people to me in the world. It was definitely an easy decision. There’s never any expectations and when we do see each other it’s like no time has passed at all.

IMG_7946 IMG_7950

Rafe chose his two closest friends from when he was a teenager, Brad and Drinkel (Tom). Both live overseas now so it was amazing that they were able to join us for our day.

IMG_7957

Why did you choose your venue?

As soon as we walked into Rosedew Farm we knew we wanted to get married there. It was the only venue we actually looked at. A big old empty barn by the sea. It was just perfect for us.

IMG_7715 IMG_7728

Tell us about your photographer

Our photographer was one of our splurges. I saw his photography on a wedding blog and I fell in love. I love Andrew’s style of photography and photos are really important to me so we contacted him. It was important to us that moments were caught on camera rather than just a posed image. I love our photos so much.

IMG_8032 IMG_8045 IMG_8141

How did the proposal happen?

We were chatting one day about our next travels. We love to travel and usually have our next two trips planned. I was saying to Rafe that I really wanted to go to Japan next year and he said “well can’t we get married instead?”. So that was that and we started planning.

IMG_7747 IMG_8159

Any DIY stories/tutorials you’d like to share?

The whole day was more or less DIY. From the invitations to the centrepieces to the cheesecake. Even the flowers were DIY. My mother in law and I spent many an hour digging in charity shops and antique shops for dream bottles and teapots, and evenings spent tying wooden cutlery and napkins. Rafe and I particularly enjoyed sampling the cheese in the shops before deciding which ones to have. My bridesmaid Becci was chief ‘florist’ and handtied all the bouquets and button holes. I think doing things DIY is more stressful and time consuming however you get to have things exactly as you want (whilst being a lot more cost effective too!). It just made the planning more exciting too as we could see everything coming together.

IMG_8158 IMG_8160 IMG_8165 IMG_8170
IMG_8173

What was your first dance & why?

We didn’t want an announced first dance so we asked the DJ to play our first dance song later in the evening unannounced. We didn’t fancy the awkward sway with everyone watching. We danced to Bob Marley, Could You be Loved at a random point of the evening. It brings back happy memories of traveling around Central America and the Caribbean (then after returning home finding out we were going to have a baby!)

IMG_8059 IMG_8064

In hindsight, was there anything you would have done differently?

I don’t think so. It was perfect.

Do you have any advice for future couples?

Relax and enjoy yourself. You only do it once and it goes so fast. Stop worrying and just enjoy your day. There’s not enough time to sweat the small stuff.

What was your favourite thing about planning a wedding?

CHEESE! I’m not kidding. Cheese shopping was so good. Getting to go around all the cheese shops and deli’s and taste loads of different cheeses before making our selections for our cheese cake.

Real Wedding: Catrin & Ian’s Rosedew Farm Wedding by Victoria Tyrrell Photography

Catrin & Ian’s gorgeous beach themed wedding at Rosedew Farm was submitted by the fabulous Victoria Tyrrell Photography. It is such a beautiful and happy day so stick the kettle on, settle in and have a good read!

On a personal note… This is the last wedding I will have the pleasure of uploading on to Cwtch the Bride so I’m glad it’s such a beauty! I have decided after a year as Features Editor to hand over the reins, but I can’t tear myself away completely so I’m sure you will see me around! Thank you to everyone who has chatted with me via email over the past year, I have loved all of your amazing weddings.

Love Charlie x
rosedew-83How would you describe your wedding theme? The overall theme of the day was the beach. We both love being at the beach and don’t live very far from some beautiful South Wales coastline. Ian proposed at the beach so it seemed to make perfect sense to continue the theme through the wedding… rosedew-92 rosedew-84

What was your favourite part of your wedding? It is very hard to choose as we honestly loved the entire day and have so many happy memories. Ian’s response – “Seeing you walk down aisle”. The ceremony was lovely. I imagined feeling nervous but in the happiness of the moment we felt it was a pleasure to say our vows to each other in the company of family and friends. Our speeches were excellent and we were thrilled to fit in a trip to Llantwit Beach after the wedding breakfast. Too many favourite parts!! rosedew-38 rosedew-41 rosedew-83

Tell us about your Wedding Dress I absolutely loved my dress but I certainly tried on a fair number in the process of choosing it! I say now that my dress search reflected my personality – I don’t make rash decisions and like to know I’ve covered all the ground before making a choice! I think me and the mums went to nearly every shop in South Wales. I finally bought the dress in Laura May Bridal. The first time I went to Laura May I felt like a child in a sweet shop – surrounded by a number of beautiful dresses that I was dying to try on. May was fantastic; she was very patient with me but also very constructive in helping me work through their beautiful dresses. I tried a number of dresses on after ‘the one’ but I didn’t like a single other A-line dress that I tried on so I knew that it was special! rosedew-4 rosedew-21 rosedew-31

Who did you pick as your bridesmaids &/or best man and why? My bridesmaid were very close friends of mine. It was an absolute joy spending time with them during the morning and the day, they are all beautiful ladies and great fun to be around.
rosedew-28Ian chose his brother as his best man. The choice was obvious, they are very close and as expected Mark did a fantastic job – his speech went down a storm! rosedew-32 rosedew-33

Why did you choose your venue? We looked at a number of venues in South Wales but Rosedew had everything we wanted and we both loved the feel of the place. We both love our food so it was important to us that we could pick our own caterers, something you can do at Rosedew. We loved the cottages and log cabins Gaynor had available and the fact that it meant lots of people could stay. Being able to put your own stamp on things is also a big bonus – it is such a blank canvas! rosedew-19 rosedew-71 rosedew-74

Tell us about your photographer We love Vikki and it was wonderful having Abi as a second shooter. Vikki did our engagement shoots and we absolutely loved them so we were very excited about our wedding photos and she certainly didn’t let us down! We felt so comfortable in Vikki and Abi’s presence which is so important when you’re spending such precious time with them on your wedding day. rosedew-65 rosedew-80 rosedew-85

How did the proposal happen? Our favourite spot is a low strip of wall which overlooks the sea at Dunraven Bay. It is a spot we have gone to for years to escape and relax. I had always had it in my head that I wanted it to happen there – I couldn’t imagine us getting engaged anywhere else so I was glad Ian had the same thought! One Friday evening, Ian suggested we took a trip up to Dunraven Bay. On our way up to ‘our spot’ I thought Ian was acting strange but he brushed it off, saying it had been a hard day at work. As we sat on the wall, Ian gave a beautiful speech and got down on one knee. I was in total shock! We spent a bit of time at the beach before heading back to a house full of balloons! rosedew-81

Any DIY stories/tutorials you’d like to share? I had lots of ideas from Pinterest but was also very fortunate to have some very creative friends and family who helped me to develop my ideas. The favourite thing I made was the driftwood boats – I adapted a guide I found on Pinterest. I used some of Ian’s old shirts and we collected a lot of driftwood from Rest Bay. They’re not only perfect for a coastal theme but lovely decorations for the home! Most importantly, it’s great to make a social occasion out of DIY projects and get friends and family involved! rosedew-95

What was your first dance & why? Everthere by Elbow. Elbow are a band that have been with us since the beginning of our relationship and their music reminds us of many a happy time. The lyrics of this song seemed perfect to us. rosedew-97

In hindsight, was there anything you would have done differently? In terms of our wedding day, we wouldn’t change a thing. We were incredibly lucky and loved every minute of it. In terms of wedding planning, I would definitely have factored more time in for DIY projects and put less pressure on myself. rosedew-92 rosedew-93rosedew-2

Do you have any advice for future couples? One guest gave the wise words ‘Nobody will notice it is missing if they didn’t know it should have been there’. With apps such as pinterest and so many good ideas from wedding blogs and friends it is easy to get over-loaded and try to do everything. I would definitely suggest keeping it realistic! We hired lots of things from Dear Florence and it really took some of the pressure off – her items are beautiful and really create an impact. We put a lot of time into researching our suppliers and it really paid off – they were all amazing. rosedew-5 rosedew-7 rosedew-8

What’s the best piece of marriage advice you received? Interestingly we didn’t get many pieces of marriage advice around the time of the wedding! In the past I have been told to expect the good times and the bad times and I think that is important. I have also been told to make time for each other, maybe even have a regular date night! rosedew-98

What was your favourite thing about planning a wedding? We were very lucky with how much friends and family helped us in the run up to our big day and the sheer amount of time and effort they put in. A number of family and friends spent many an hour and weekend at our house and the time spent with them was a real pleasure – we were both overwhelmed by their kindness. rosedew-15 rosedew-25 rosedew-70 rosedew-79 rosedew-87

Real Wedding: Aimee & Tim’s Rosedew Farm Wedding by Adrian Hibbert

Here at Cwtch we love a wedding at Rosedew Farm – such a gorgeous venue! Aimee & Tim got married at Rosedew Farm (Farmer’s Barns) in Llantwit Major in April last year. (We hope we get the same weather for Cwtchfest!) With photographs from Adrian Hibbert, here is Aimee to tell us all about their day.

Image-48

What was your budget?  Our budget was £10,000, I think we may have gone over it a little bit but not much.

How would you describe your wedding theme? Our wedding theme was quite rustic with vintage homemade touches. We had lots of bunting, fairylights and candles, hay bales and a fire. We used hessian and lace to decorate the venue and also used my mums vintage tea-cup collection and cake stands. Image-39 Image-43Image-42What was your favourite part of your wedding? I loved seeing all of our friends and family enjoying themselves, me and Tim spent most of the day together and managed to chat to most of our guests. We wanted a relaxed atmosphere and think we managed to achieve this. We were really lucky with the weather and it was really warm for April. We managed to sneak off to the beach for some photos after the meal and this was a really lovely part of the day. The band were great and the dance floor was full all evening and was great fun!!

Image-36 Image-66

Tell us about your Wedding Dress  My dress was a Pronovias dress and I fell in love with it when I tried it on and so did my Mum and Sister who were with me. I hadn’t looked at the price tag though and decided it was too expensive, a couple of weeks later I tried it on again in All About Eve, Chepstow and decided to have it as no other dress seemed to compare! I loved the dress so never regretted my decision! Image-17

Who did you pick as your bridesmaids &/or best man and why?  We kept our bridal party quite small, I had my sister as bridesmaid and she was so supportive and involved the whole way through. Tim chose his friend Huw as best man, they have been friends since school and he was the ‘best man’ for the job!  Image-34

Why did you choose your venue? We chose Rosedew Farm – Farmers Barns in Llantwit major, I had been to a wedding there the year before and loved it! The owners are very flexible and you can create your own wedding with very few restrictions. You can chose all of your own suppliers, have a bonfire and bring your own food and drink without any corkage fees, this is what we did and it worked out very well thanks to help from family and friends! The barn is very rustic and looks beautiful when it is decorated with lots of fairly lights and bunting. You can get married there and have your reception in the same place which is what we did so people could arrive and settle in for the day. There is also a lot of accommodation on site and we stayed for three nights with all of our family which made it even more special! The fact that it is on the coast is also a bonus!  Image-7Image-68 Image-69

How did the proposal happen?  We were in Croatia and it was my birthday. Tim wanted to go for a coastal walk so we set off and he was acting a little bit strange, checking over his shoulder a lot, acting distracted and paying a lot of attention to the location. He suggested we stop at a nice spot by the sea, I sat down on a rock and he got a ring out of his wallet and proposed, it was amazing and very romantic. We were both so excited after that and walked back already making plans for the big day! Image-54

Any DIY stories/tutorials you’d like to share? We decorated jam jars with lace and my mum did all the flower arrangements and they looked stunning! We collected lots of bits and bobs over the few months before the wedding and they made the venue look very personalised and the welsh dresser looked stunning with lots of family photos and pretty vintage things. We also prepared our own food for the daytime meal, each table had a picnic basket on it with lots of picnic food, this was quite a lot of work the day and weeks before the wedding but was quite unique and everyone seemed to enjoy it! It also saved us lots of money! Image-27

What was your first dance & why? We chose Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straits mostly because we both just love that song!

In hindsight, was there anything you would have done differently? We probably wouldn’t have had a first dance…neither of us were comfortable about being so in the limelight and dancing in front of people and we didn’t practice at all so we just stood there a bit awkwardly!! Image-71

Do you have any advice for future couples? We got married six months after getting engaged which was quite quick but we managed to have the wedding we wanted and found the time for DIY projects and all the other things you need to arrange for a wedding. We had to be quite organised and worked hard for those six months but I think if people think that it is not possible to create your perfect wedding in a short space of time then I would say that it is possible! We got married on Easter Monday though so did not have the problems booking bands etc. that people often seem to have with Saturday weddings, especially in the summer.

What was your favourite thing about planning a wedding? Planning the wedding was very special and we were focused on making it the day we wanted and not what anyone else wanted. I loved finding lots of inspiration from other weddings and websites and just creating a day that was individual and meant something to us….seeing it all come together on the day of the wedding was amazing and made it worth all of the hard work! Sampling lots of different food and drinks was also very enjoyable!  Image-1 Image-28 Image-70
