Lisa And Steve’s DIY Welsh Barn Wedding By Maria Farrelly Photography

We love, love, LOVE a DIY Welsh Barn Wedding here at Cwtch HQ!

Today we are sharing a wedding that I photographed last year. Lisa & Steve, along with all their friends and family rolled their sleeves up and completely DIY’d this working barn for their wedding day. Every bit of detail you see in these pictures was put together by them all. If that wasn’t great enough, every single one of their guests were simply fabulous individuals and I’m a huge believer that your guests can make or break your wedding day. The Ceremony was full of laughter and tears by all, the dance floor was never empty and the photo booth at the end… well, you can see for yourself :)

It was an absolute pleasure to have photographed this wedding and to also work alongside some great wedding suppliers such as Kate Petersen & Holdens Catering.

I’m so thrilled with all the images, especially as I know Lisa & Steve adore them. So… without further a do, lets hand you over to Lisa to tell you all about her wedding. ~ Maria

welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.084How would you describe your wedding theme?

Handmade, everyone pitched in barn wedding.welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.079

What were your favourite parts of your wedding?

The emotional roller coaster that was the service.welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.044 We had a wonderful few days with everyone chipping in to help. welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.074Walking down the aisle with my dad surrounded by everyone we loved, just floored me.welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.040

My step dad officiated, our wonderful Usher, John prepared the most wonderful personal reading and I wouldn’t have made it through the vows with out sobbing, had our badly planned ceremony back drop not provided some light relief & broken the ice. The photos of Steve and I laughing surrounded by streamers are some of my favourite of the day.welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.043

welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.047Tell us about your Wedding Dress

I love a beautiful gown but the idea of spending more on one dress that my entire wardrobe didn’t sit too well with my bargain hunting nature…so it was with a little trepidation that I ventured out dress shopping one spring day with my wonderful bridesmaids in tow.

The dress was by Lusan Mandongus/Anna Sully & was the second one I tried on. I loved it. But in all honesty the trip solidified that spending that much on a dress wasn’t a priority for me…So a few more trips later & a lot of wonderful options explored, I was about to hire a gorgeous alternative when this one appeared on Preloved.welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.003

Picking it up coincided with a work trip up North, a random rondevous in a car park & breaking down in the middle of no where with my sister! There were a few tears when after trying it on I realised I’d been a tad optimistic in the sizing & it wasn’t in perfect condition, but with the help of my mum and a big dollop of patience we cleaned, adjusted and tweaked it back to life!welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.004welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.009

In the end I felt brilliant wearing it & the saving paid for a band..and LOTS of bubbles, totally worth the effort. welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.114

Who did you pick as your bridesmaids &/or best man and why?

Our wedding party was made up of live long friends and people we both love to bits. They were all wonderful, chipping in, making the build up and the whole day so wonderful.welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.077

Surround yourselves with people you love & make you laugh & you cant really go wrong can you!

Why did you choose your venue?

We wanted somewhere we could decorate how we wanted, bring in our own caterers and allowed us to provide our own alcohol…That ruled out a lot. When we meet Mirander & her husband at the farm we knew it was a good match. Over looking the fact it was a working barn in the middle of winter they were so accommodating and nice. We knew it was a winner! welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.033welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.026welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.093

Tell us about your photographer

The AMAZING & super creative genius that is Maria Farrelly. We had met the year before at a Cwtch The Bride event and after spending the day with her at a friends wedding and seeing her wonderful work, no one else could come close!

Maria simply becomes one of the family for the day…The beautiful and natural images she creates is testament to how at ease she makes everyone! I will cherish her pictures for ever!

How did the proposal happen?

We were at a BBQ and incredibly drunk sat chatting on a friends sofa! Not a modern day fairy tale exactly, but very heartfelt & looking back very us. Ring shopping the next day was interesting way of warding off a hangover!welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.053

Any DIY stories/tutorials you’d like to share?

A lot was do it yourself with a big helping hand from family and friends. From the cake to the decor, lighting & stationary. I enjoy making things and work in a design industry so this was pretty enjoyable!

The biggest thing we pulled off was probably the flowers, with the exception of my bouquet, my green fingered mum grew & arranged all the flowers! Seeing her garden transform in the months building up to the wedding was exciting! She put so much love & hard work into planning & growing them all…welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.025You need to be the sort of person who can go with the flow a little, as you can’t really be sure what you’ll have to work with till the week of the wedding, but it was a personal touch that really transformed our venue. Its worth mentioning that the peonies came from Aldi…Who are great and if you call in a few days before hand will order in extras for you!

In hindsight, was there anything you would have done differently?

Picked a closer hotel. We had visions of staying up all night at a hotel bar chatting over late night drinks..In reality we were exhausted! A comfy bed, minus the hour long coach drive would have been a better idea.welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.129Also don’t stress the small stuff..Not everything will go to plan, but in all honesty you will be in to much of a happy bubble to care…and going off plan might even lead to some wonderful memories (Like our poor wind battered back drop photos!)welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.050

Do you have any advice for future couples?

Prioritise your budget right from the start…and stick to it. Some things really mattered to us & made the decision process a lot easier when we came across a few budget dilemmas…Like falling in love with a venue that was realistically more than we had planned. Some traditional things simply dropped off our list, like cars for example..Meaning we could splash out on a safari honeymoon in Africa!welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.036

What was your favourite thing about planning a wedding?

Seeing the months of work and planning all come together on the day. Take a moment and soak it all in when everyone’s eating or dancing or just chatting…it goes by so fast, but seeing everyone happy and there to celebrate with you is great!welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.056

Kate and Marc’s Informal Wedding by Rocksalt Photography

Wow Wow Wow!!!

This beautiful informal wedding in the Brecon gave me goosebumps. Once again Rocksalt Photography has knocked it out of the park! I cant wait for you to fall in love with Kate and Marc’s photographs and I hope that you are inspired by this little gem.

Marc_Kate-167Marc_Kate-142What was your budget?

The budget spreadsheet was the first thing we put together after booking the venue. We set a budget for everything we thought we needed or wanted for the day…and pretty much kept to it. We decided on the things we definitely wanted, such as a live band, and those that were nice extras if we had any budget left.Marc_Kate-140

How would you describe your wedding theme?

We really didn’t want to choose a specific theme or colour scheme and have everything matching. We wanted a more informal, rustic look. But in the end yellow ended up being the main colour, which we used with lots of different coloured flowers so not to be too matchy.Marc_Kate-244Marc_Kate-246

What was your favourite part of your wedding?

It was lovely to have our friends and family at the venue the day before to help decorate the venue – that was a really fun part of the whole weekend.

Walking up the aisle after the ceremony with everyone clapping and cheering was a lovely moment. And the dancing in the evening was brilliant!Marc_Kate-118

Tell us about your Wedding Dress

My dress is by La Sposa, from Timeless Elegance in Cardiff. The biggest money splurge was my dress, it was way over the original (unrealistic) budget I set . The dress was worth every penny though!Marc_Kate-1Marc_Kate-2

Why did you choose your venue?

We wanted a relaxed venue which felt like ‘us’ and somewhere we could hold the entire day. The views are fantastic at Brynich and it has the advantage of gorgeous cottages on site so friends and family could celebrate with us all weekend. When we were driving away from the appointment, we were sure we had found the right venue for us. We only looked at one other venue – and then decided on Brynich.Marc_Kate-254Marc_Kate-41

Tell us about your photographer

We looked up Hannah at Rocksalt after seeing photos she had taken for a friends wedding, and liked her informal approach and reasonable prices.
We were both apprehensive about the photography and thought we would feel really uncomfortable with a photographer but as soon as we met Hannah we knew we would have a giggle and feel comfortable with her. Also her photos are amazing! Hannah was brilliant to have around on the day as well – a fun and calming influence!Marc_Kate-168

How did the proposal happen?

We went to Rome for a few days with Marc’s dad and Marc proposed at a viewpoint overlooking the city…after subtly asking his Dad to leave us alone for a minute!Marc_Kate-318

Any DIY stories/tutorials you’d like to share?

We made our own invitations and order of the day cards. We made up a photo board of us as a couple and another including a photo of nearly every guest at the wedding.
We decorated jam jars for the table flowers – this added to the rustic afternoon tea look.
My Dad & Pat provided all of the flowers to decorate the venue and me and my bridesmaids helped to put together the table floral arrangements the day before – this was a really nice part of the preparations.
My Dad made small wooden hearts for each guests place name which looked lovely on the tableMarc_Kate-250

In hindsight, was there anything you would have done differently?

Nothing!! We loved how all our friends and family were mingling and having a really good time. We were suprised by how relaxed we both felt and how smoothly the day went. We would love to do it all again.Marc_Kate-253

Do you have any advice for future couples?

When planning – make decisions and stick to them, don’t over think every last detail. Limit the number of wedding magazines you buy, they are filled with brilliant ideas but you can’t do everything and it can be overwhelming. You will make sure the things that are really important to both of you are completed, if there is anything left on your to do list the night before it isn’t that important to you so forget it and enjoy your day!
On the day – relax and enjoy every minute and make sure you spend some time together!
We put together playlists for the day and booked Coverland Band to play in the evening. This was a risk as we booked them off the internet and had not seen them play live. They were brilliant, and we would highly recommend them. We also put together a ‘metal’ playlist to play during the band break – it’s fair to say this led to some pretty amazing dancing!

Introducing Our DIY Bride Jess

I have a real treat for all you brides attempting a little bit of DIY for your wedding! How could we not ask this beautiful lady not to share her planning adventures with all of you! Introducing our DIY Bride Jess…Enjoy.
Portugal 2015 (3)SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURESRod and I met just over 13 years ago at University in Liverpool, we were 20 years old. It took what felt like months to make our feelings known to one another. In reality it was 2 weeks. The 24th September will be our wedding day and the 14th anniversary of our first date.rod & jess5SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Writing this blog has given me cause to reflect back on the last 13 years, for marriage is a commitment people have been making to one another for centuries. (Although not always for love!)

We have had our share ups and downs just like everyone else and it hasn’t always been strawberries and cream. However, no one else has made me laugh so much, made me feel so special or accepted me for who I am than Rod.rod & jess8SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

We are both 34 years old (although I am 6 weeks older!). We moved to Swansea 6 years ago to be closer to the surf. We both love doing sports like surfing, running, cycling, yoga… the list goes on. Rod is a support worker on a mental health ward and I am a business manager for a local engineering company. In addition to the sport we both like to be creative in our spare time. Rod plays guitar and writes his own music. I am always working on some kind of arts and crafts or sewing project.Portugal 2015 (4)

What else can I say about Rod…? I love the fact that he makes me laugh so much, and he is musical, intelligent and handsome too of course! If there is one thing I could change about him it would be his stubbornness, and that he doesn’t listen to me. (Ok, that’s two things!)SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURESrod 2

What does he say about me? I’m kind, intelligent, artistic and beautiful. (Isn’t he nice!)

The one thing he would change? I always take on too much (like planning a whole wedding!)

2016 will be all about the wedding for me and for Rod I suspect it will be ignoring the mania as much as possible. He has already told me that I’m a ‘Bridezilla’! Ha – I’m just getting into my stride!SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

I am planning on doing a lot myself for the wedding including the bridal gown, decorations, button holes, favours, flowers…. the list goes on. I may have bitten off more than I can chew this time though! (Don’t tell Rod)

With just over 9 months to go until the big day I shall post regular updates on how it’s all going, including the ups and melt-downs!

Take care

Jess x

I don’t know if i would be brave enough to attempt the dress but I can’t wait to hear all about it. I made loads of bits for my wedding and all my guests really appreciated the effort. County Marquees, Cwtchfest Collaborator

Good morning Cwtchers!

Today on the blog we have the lovely Niki from County Marquees explaining why choosing a marquee for your wedding reception can be the perfect choice.

We are super excited to be teaming up with County marquees again this year at Cwtchfest 2016 at Glanusk Estate, Crickhowell.

This fabulous company have a simple ethos Experience, Care and Choice and we at Cwtch have loved our partnership over the last couple of years and can thoroughly recommend their expertise and knowledge.

Why book a marquee for your wedding reception instead of a hotel??

Marquees are the perfect space for that DIY dream wedding!

Having a marquee for your wedding reception can mean more freedom to do exactly what you want to do. A marquee really is a blank canvas on which to apply your style rather than putting up with fixed decor at a venue!  If you’re lucky enough to have space for a marquee at home or have found a suitable location, you can have a much more memorable day relaxing with your friends and family knowing that you’re not being pressurized by timeframes set by a hotel.

40' x 90'

A huge positive for having a marquee reception is that you can select a caterer of your choice! There are so many amazing options out there, all providing top notch locally sourced food! We work with lots of great local caterers who are well used to working in marquees. Just ask for our recommendations, we are very happy to help.

If you’re worried about the costs involved in holding a marquee reception, don’t! Having a marquee doesn’t have to be expensive, with careful planning and detailed discussions we can work to all budgets. A lovely idea for saving money would be to ask your guests to bring along a dessert or help make decorations for the inside of the marquee.

If you are concerned that planning every detail would be a pain, at County Marquees we offer an event planning service to take the stress out of your hands. We provide a bespoke service, from wedding day on site assistance through to full wedding planning. We can also help in locating your dream venue to have a marquee.

So what are you waiting for, get in touch now and speak to one of our lovely event managers who really will put your mind at rest and begin the exciting process of planning your marquee wedding!
