Claire and Christian’s Relaxed City Chic Wedding by Maria Farrelly Photography

We’re so excited to share todays wedding with you all!

If you followed our blog last year, you will have enjoyed following Claire’s journey to the alter. If you missed her posts, you can take a look hereClaire & Christian commissioned Cwtch The Bride’s creator and leading wedding photographer Maria Farrelly Photography to capture their relaxed and super stylish ceremony at the Council Chamber, City Hall, Cardiff followed by at relaxed reception at the Norwegian Church, Cardiff bay.

We think you’ll agree by the expressions on their faces that this day was every bit how they imagined and much more!

Wedding333What was your budget?

In all honesty, we didn’t really have one… Not because we’ve got money to burn but we knew that we wanted a wedding which suited us as a couple… Laid back and down to earth. So, we knew from the start that we wouldn’t be spending huge amounts of money on unnecessary or extravagant things which we didn’t really need. Its so easy to get carried away when you start planning a wedding but I think we were fairly disciplined!Wedding334

How would you describe your wedding theme?

Laid back, relaxed and full of love!Wedding315

What was your favourite part of your wedding?

It’s so hard to pick a favourite part! I loved it all! I think my favourite part though was the moment I walked into the Council Chamber room at City Hall, where our ceremony took place, and seeing Christian waiting for me. In about five seconds, I felt so many emotions… Relief that he was there, a flood of love and a burst of happiness at seeing all my family and friends.Wedding114

Tell us about your Wedding Dress

Ahhhh my wedding dress! Love, love, love it! I wrote a blog post for Cwtch the Bride about my experience, you can read it here! I was determined not to trawl around a million and one shops trying on hundreds of dresses… That’s just not me. I did some research online about shops and narrowed my list down to three shops. Literally, at the first shop, I was convinced that I’d found “THE dress” but I’m so glad that I went to the other two shops as it was at the third shop (All About Eve in Newport) that I found THE dress. I would advise any bride to be to not be swept away with the whole ‘trying on dresses’ experience. It’s so easy to do as the dresses are so gorgeous but focus, focus, focus is key! I ordered my dress in a size 10, paid a deposit then two months later found out I was pregnant!! Luckily, I managed to get into the dress with only a quarter of inch let out needed (to accommodate my slightly bigger post baby boobs!).Wedding064Wedding301

Who did you pick as your bridesmaids &/or best man and why?

My sister was my only bridesmaid. I have three best friends who I would’ve loved to have had as bridesmaids but I wanted a laid back, relaxed wedding and I think that walking in with a troupe of bridesmaids slightly deviates from that theme! I toyed with the idea of having no bridesmaids but my sister and I are so close, I really couldn’t have said “I do” without her being there with me.Wedding020

Why did you choose your venue?

We chose City Hall for our ceremony as it’s such an iconic city centre landmark. The building is beautiful and we picked the Council Chamber room as its steeped in history and all the seating is in a circle around the room. We just loved the idea of getting married in the middle of the room with all our guests around us. The Norwegian Church for our reception venue suited us perfectly. It’s extremely laid back but in a beautiful setting in the Bay.Wedding061Wedding563

Tell us about your photographer

Maria Farrelly! What can I say?! Just amazing! Maria knew exactly what we wanted and had so many ideas for us to incorporate our wishes, she was brilliant.Wedding343

How did the proposal happen?

I wrote a blog post for Cwtch the Bride about this too! Christian and I had booked a city break to Stockholm for my 34th birthday. My birthday was on a Friday which is the day we flew to Sweden. On the Saturday night, we’d booked a table at Gondolen restaurant to celebrate my birthday and we were happily discussing how we’d started dating and how amazing it was that we were together when Christian popped the question! It was completely unexpected and Christian had hidden the ring in his sock in his luggage!Wedding531Wedding355

Any DIY stories/tutorials you’d like to share?

I’m not much of a DIYer if I’m honest!Wedding384

What was your first dance & why?

We didn’t really have a first dance in the traditional sense of the word. We picked a song which meant a lot to us and held lots of happy memories and invited everyone up with us to dance. The song was Edge of Seventeen by Stevie Nicks and reminds us both of a road trip we took from LA to San Fran on the Pacific Highway. We hired a Ford Mustang (convertible obvs!) for the journey and this song came on our playlist as we were leaving LA via Mulholland Drive. We were both singing along, the sun was blazing and we were free as Bees! Such a happy time made this song a no brainier for our first dance.Wedding582Wedding681

In hindsight, was there anything you would have done differently?

Nothing at all. As cheesy as it sounds, the day was exactly as we wanted.Wedding266

Do you have any advice for future couples?

My only advice would be to stick to what you wanted when you first started planning your wedding. It’s so easy to get carried away with things during the planning process, especially when Pinterest etc are easily accessible, but stick to your guns and you’ll end up with the wedding that you always wanted at the beginning.Wedding309

What’s the best piece of marriage advice you received?

We didn’t really receive any advice that I can remember! I think our vows are good advice though if they count!Wedding149

What was your favourite thing about planning a wedding?

I think just sitting down with Christian (normally with a glass of wine up until I found out I was pregnant!) and discussing our plans made me realise how suited we really were. We both liked and disliked the same things and, not that I needed any reassurance, but the planning process firmly rooted in that we were meant to be together.Wedding265Wedding326

Real Wedding: Craig & Sali’s cool summer fete styled wedding with a vintage twist.

We have a beauty of a wedding for you today! Craig & Sali tied the knot earlier this year in the stunning council chambers of the City Hall, Cardiff followed by a relaxed reception at The Gate. We’re pleased to have both bride & groom share their wedding story with you today. All the images featured were taken by one of our fabulous Lust List Members Aled Garfield Photography. Enjoy x

Sali & Craig Alternative Wedding (60 of 122)

What was your budget?

When we got engaged and started planning we were working under the assumption that we would be paying for the wedding ourselves. We didn’t really have a budget in mind but didn’t have any savings so had to plan the wedding we wanted as cheaply as possible.

We were extremely fortunate to have help from family with the cost. This meant that we were able to spend our own money on a few special details like the band and the photographer, which were a little more expensive than we would otherwise have been able to afford but made the day all the more special for us. In the end we spent around £8000 in total which was manageable for us, but without feeling like we had made too many sacrifices.

Sali & Craig Alternative Wedding (50 of 122)

How would you describe your wedding theme?

The theme was a kind of vintage style tea party / summer fete. We wanted something pretty and colourful but relaxed and not too formal. We threw in some quirky details too just to make it our own.

What was your favourite part of your wedding?

Craig: The best part for me was going out and having the photos taken after the ceremony at Roath park. The weather was beautiful – perfect for an icecream!

Sali & Craig Alternative Wedding (86 of 122)
Sali: I agree, it was a lot of fun! The whole day was so emotional and overwhelming that it was nice to have a little bit of time just the two of us. One part of the wedding that surprised me was the car. We had struggled to find something in a style we liked and ended up booking the car relatively late. The driver was incredible. He had a ‘bridal emergency kit’ in the front seat and kept me at ease on the way to the ceremony, and even did a champagne toast for us both outside City Hall straight after the ceremony. He was the sweetest guy and did a lot to make sure we had the best experience.

Tell us about your Wedding Dress

Sali: The dress was a bit of a sticking point for me. At the time that I started looking I was reading a lot of wedding magazines and not seeing anything that I liked. I wasn’t really interested in a long gown or anything too sparkly, and was drawn to short / knee-length dresses and quirky vintage styles.

Sali & Craig Alternative Wedding (3 of 122)
I happened to be at a wedding fayre at Cardiff City Hall and spotted a beautiful polka dot knee length dress on a boutique’s stall which I tried on and instantly fell in love with. As a designer dress it didn’t really fit within our budget so I resigned myself to the fact that I would have to find something more within our price range. I didn’t try on any other dresses because I knew that this was exactly the style I was looking for.

Sali & Craig Alternative Wedding (72 of 122)
I did a lot of research online and eventually stumbled on Honeypie Boutique, a website which sells custom-made vintage style dresses. They had a dress design almost identical to the one that I had tried on for a really reasonable price. I added in a petticoat underneath the skirt and ended up with almost exactly the same dress at a fraction of the cost.

On the day I had so many compliments I could not have been happier. It was something non-traditional and so perfect for my taste and style, without breaking the bank.

Who did you pick as your bridesmaids &/or best man and why?

Craig: I couldn’t pick between my two oldest friends Tom & Jamie, so I picked them both! We have known each other for years and so for me they were the obvious choices. Sali & Craig Alternative Wedding (64 of 122)

Sali: I picked three of my closest friends. Abbie has been a friend since we were teenagers and we both relocated to Cardiff within a couple of years of each other. I shared a house with Laura when I first moved to Cardiff and we had such a lot in common that we have remained really good friends ever since. Christina & I met at work about 5 years ago and we have become really close friends in a really short time. They really are my favourite people. They have all been there for me and for us as a couple at different times.  Sali & Craig Alternative Wedding (65 of 122)

We also had a flower girl, our niece Isabella. She was two the week after the wedding and was the star of the show all day. Everybody loved her and she kept everyone entertained on the dance floor all night.Sali & Craig Alternative Wedding (53 of 122)

Why did you choose your venue?

The wedding ceremony was in the Council Chamber at Cardiff City Hall. Neither of us are religious so felt a church wedding would not suit us at all. We were looking for alternatives and the first place we looked at was City Hall. As soon as we walked into the Council Chamber we were sold. The shape, size and grandeur of the room are just so unique, and the wood panelling and decor are breathtaking. Sali & Craig Alternative Wedding (39 of 122)

We’ve both been to weddings at hotels and function venues and although they have been lovely, they can be a bit devoid of personality. For our reception, we wanted something a little more quirky, but with the setup to please all the different groups that would be there. Weddings are a great chance for family to catch up, so we wanted to make sure that was possible by having somewhere that we could dance all night, but the older relatives could sit and have a drink and chat. Thats why we chose The Gate.

Tell us about your photographer

Where to start. We definitely didn’t want a photographer that would be barking orders all day and want to take hundreds of set-up shots. After doing a bit of research online and looking at Aled’s portfolio we loved his documentary style of shooting. Although his set-up shots are fantastic, the remainder of the day he blended into the background and allowed us to enjoy ourselves without being intrusive.

Sali & Craig Alternative Wedding (45 of 122)
He would take us to a location and give us an idea of what he wanted to achieve, but would give us free reign to be ourselves. He seemed to right away know the kind of things that we would like and made us feel at ease in front of the camera.

Sali & Craig Alternative Wedding (71 of 122)Sali & Craig Alternative Wedding (83 of 122)Sali & Craig Alternative Wedding (90 of 122)
On top of that he’s just a top guy. He was so available and happy to answer questions in the run up to the wedding and the engagement shoot, and even since. We really couldn’t more highly recommend him.

How did the proposal happen?

Craig: Beyond buying the ring I hadn’t thought about how I was going to propose, I didn’t have a plan particularly and was just going to wait for a moment to present itself! Once I had bought the ring though, I was so worried that Sali would find it somewhere in the house that I ended up asking her at home a day or two later!

Sali: I got home from a bit of a crappy day at work and Craig had cooked a nice dinner and we were just relaxing watching TV and having a chat about how our days had been. He told me that he’d been out shopping and when I asked what he’d bought he came to me with a ring box and just got down on one knee and asked me right there in the living room! At the time it seemed as though he had been planning it with the dinner and everything, I couldn’t help laughing when I found out he’d just had to ask me there and then so that I didn’t figure it out myself!

Sali & Craig Alternative Wedding (117 of 122)

Any DIY stories/tutorials you’d like to share?

Sali: I decided pretty early on that I wanted to make the decorations myself. I enjoy crafting and thought it would save a bit of money if it was homemade. The one thing we saved a lot on was flowers.

Sali & Craig Alternative Wedding (75 of 122)
I knew I wanted a non-traditional bouquet, and because of the style we wanted for the centrepieces they lent themselves well to using artificial flowers rather than real ones. This also meant that I could make them way ahead of time. I shopped around a few home stores for silk flowers and picked up a few bits and pieces there but most of the flowers were bought online.
Sali & Craig Alternative Wedding (93 of 122)
The colour scheme we were having was pastels and so the flower colours didn’t all have to match. This meant I was able to just pick up the odd few here and there whenever I saw anything that I liked at a decent price. Once we had enough for all of the centrepiece flower arrangements I stared putting them all together and we both thought they looked fantastic!

What was your first dance & why?

Craig: The first dance song was ‘You & Me’ by Penny and the Quarters. The song is from the movie ‘Blue Valentine’ which is one of our favourites. After we’d watched it I read an article in The Guardian about the song itself and how it had been found on a 1970’s demo tape at a yard sale and released as part of a compilation. Ryan Gosling somehow stumbled across it and wanted to use it as part of the movie. In the film his character gives a recording to Michelle Williams’s character as ‘their song’. The first time she heard the track was when they filmed the scene, and her reaction was genuinely moving. We loved it right away and it seemed perfect.

Sali & Craig Alternative Wedding (121 of 122)

In hindsight, was there anything you would have done differently?

There is nothing that either of us would change. On the day everything went off without a hitch and we loved every second of it. All our friends and family said they had a blast too!

During the last couple of weeks before the wedding day I think we both regretted taking on so much of it ourselves, what with making all the decorations and everything. But seeing it all come together on the day was incredible and made all the stress totally worth it.

Do you have any advice for future couples?

It is possible to spend loads on a wedding day but the one thing you can’t buy is atmosphere. Don’t sacrifice space for your friends in favour of some obscure relative who you never see, or a work colleague who you have known for 5 minutes. Having the right people around you makes all the difference, and you can’t beat having all of your best friends in one room to celebrate with you.

Sali & Craig Alternative Wedding (108 of 122)Sali & Craig Alternative Wedding (103 of 122)Sali & Craig Alternative Wedding (116 of 122)

We definitely believe that you can have the wedding that you want without breaking the bank. Sure, you can spend tens of thousands on your wedding day if that’s what you want but we genuinely had exactly what we wanted and had the best day of our lives for a fraction of that.

The only other thing we would say is not to buckle to the pressure of what other people want. Your wedding is your day. Do what you want to make yourselves happy. Be selfish because you’re only going to do it once (hopefully).

What’s the best piece of marriage advice you received?

Sali: The favourite thing that was said to me was ‘always be friends’. I tried to keep this in mind throughout the planning stages of the wedding and although things got stressful at times, we never let it get to us or took any of it out on one another.

Craig: On one of our message cards someone wrote something that has stayed with me.
‘Marriage Advice
1. Sali’s always right
2. Never let the sun set on an argument
3. If struggling with rule 2 refer to rule 1’

Sali & Craig Alternative Wedding (102 of 122)

What was your favourite thing about planning a wedding?

Craig: For me the best part was the meetings with Lynsey at The Gate. We would go to her with all of our crazy ideas and she was so patient and accommodating, even when we went way outside of their normal wedding packages. Her organisation skills were unbelievable. The paperwork and planning involved in any wedding is huge but we really felt like she went above and beyond for us.

Sali: I loved the ideas stage of the planning. Unlike a lot of girls I hadn’t really thought about what I would want for my wedding, so we were starting from scratch. It was fun reading all those wedding magazines and writing down ideas, and I loved being able to go to Craig and say ‘what do you think about this?’ and have us both be totally on the same page. It was fun to come up with ways to make the day unique to us.

Real Wedding: Christine & Alyn’s Red & Blue Wedding by Maria Farrelly

I’m so pleased to share this wedding with you all today. I had the pleasure of photographing Christine & Alyn’s Red & Blue wedding last year. The whole planning process was going so well until two weeks before the big day, they were given the awful news that their wedding venue had closed down. I was with them when it happened and my heart sank. They are such a lovely couple and had been planning their wedding for two years. You’d think they would have crumbled under the panic and pressure. Oh no, read on to hear how this fabulous couple coped and how their wedding day turned out to be perfect in every way.

Cardiff_Wedding_Photography067What was your budget?

Our budget was about £17k but we came really under budget and only spent about £13k. In the end with all the trouble we had with our venue, it actually all worked out cheaper for us. Because I work in finance, I love my spreadsheets. Had a spreadsheet for my budget and spend. Even had a pie chart! Venue was the biggest cost with clothes and photos joint second. Spent a little too much on my dress but we always knew we wanted to set a bit aside for a good photographer. Both families helped with the budget and we’re really thankful to them.

Cardiff_Wedding_Photography040How would you describe your wedding theme?

We didn’t really want a theme but both being from a TV and film background, we decided to add a few movie things in. Our colour scheme was red and blue, being that I am from England and Alyn is Welsh. We used the British colours. We then used black and white for things to represent the TV/film side.

Cardiff_Wedding_Photography070Cardiff_Wedding_Photography074Cardiff_Wedding_Photography075Really loved our menu and order of the day. Alyn brought two bits of wood, painted them black and designed it with a chalk pen. Took inspiration from ideas from Pinterest, where it really stands out against the black.
We had table numbers with different film scenes on the back. We had to have Ghostbusters on the top table as Alyn is obsessed with that film! Others included James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Goodfellas, etc.
Also had a film soundtrack playlist from Spotify playing in the background of the reception, which Alyn and the best man, Rob had put together. Bit weird when the Godfather theme came on whilst eating our meal.

Cardiff_Wedding_Photography076Cardiff_Wedding_Photography071What was your favourite part of your wedding?

I was early at the church and had to wait round the corner until we were ready to start.Cardiff_Wedding_Photography032

I was very relaxed most of that day except for that part when my heart was racing. All I wanted to do was see him. That was the best part, realising what the day was all about. I was about to marry my best friend and it was such a great feeling when I saw him and met him at the altar to become his wife. Cardiff_Wedding_Photography033Cardiff_Wedding_Photography034Cardiff_Wedding_Photography038Also loved going off with our photographer, Maria Farrelly down to Penarth Pier. After a little bit of rain going into the church, the sun came out and it was gorgeous. Cardiff_Wedding_Photography063Cardiff_Wedding_Photography065Tell us about your wedding dress

I really wanted my mum and my sister, Nicola there to help me pick a dress. They live in Swindon, so we decided to blitz it on a weekend. I had arranged appointments at 3 boutiques in Wales as I didn’t want to get bogged down with loads of shops.
I originally went in with the idea of a very fitted straight dress with lace, nothing A-Line or big princess dress. I tried on a few like this but nothing really stood out.
It wasn’t until my sister persuaded me to try this A-Line, very simple wedding dress in Laura May Bridal, Cardiff. It had a gorgeous silk skirt and lovely lace detail on top. As soon as I saw myself in the mirror, I felt like a bride. I could not stop smiling and didn’t want to take off. It was completely the opposite to what I had imagined but so much better.

Who did you pick as your bridesmaids &/or best man and why?

My chief Bridesmaid was always going to be my sister. Cardiff_Wedding_Photography099I had two other bridesmaids, my friend from university, Cath and Alyn’s niece, Ella. Cardiff_Wedding_Photography024Alyn’s best man was Rob, who lived with Alyn in University. Cardiff_Wedding_Photography028All our bridesmaids, best man and ushers were amasing. We have great friends and family.

Why did you choose your venue?

My first wedding fayre (just after I got engaged) was at the Coal Exchange, Cardiff. I was looking for venues at that point and someone mentioned about having the wedding there. The Coal Exchange is such a grand place with so much history and character, we instantly thought it would be magical. So we booked! 2 years in advance.

It got to about 2 weeks before the date and we were meeting with our photographer, Maria at the Coal Exchange to do a Reece. As we got to the venue, Mike who we had been dealing with, pulled me, Alyn and Maria to one side.
He told us that fire officers have been in that day to say that the building was not safe and would have to close. Two weeks before our wedding we had to look for another venue!

To be honest, I thought I would just freak out but Alyn helped. He drove me straight to get a bottle of wine and a fat piece of cake!
The next day I rang every venue I could think of. I was in work but just kept constantly ringing venues. The Coal Exchange and our caterers gave us a full refund really quickly which helped considering they themselves may have lost their jobs and livelihood.

It was with great luck that the St David’s hotel didn’t have a booking that day and we were due to stay there anyway on the wedding night. They were amazing! Got bumped up the the wedding suite, got a discount at the bar (due to one of our great friends who helped us out).

Cardiff_Wedding_Photography083It wasn’t just that though, the hotel is so modern and elegant. Everyone made us so welcome and relaxed. Couldn’t have gone better on the day.Cardiff_Wedding_Photography084

Any advice for couples that may experience something similar?
Speak to friends and family who may be able to help as you are not alone in it, one of Alyn’s friends got us a good deal on the bar for our new venue. Just don’t panic and think that it will all come together on the day

How did the proposal happen?

To be honest, Alyn is not the best person at keeping secrets. I had sort of an idea that he was about to propose. (Left a picture of an engagement ring in his jean pocket and a ring sizer in the car door!)
It was a really sunny summers day and Alyn decided we should take a trip to Cardiff Bay as it wasn’t that far from where we lived. We walked there and he took me out towards the bay looking out, I turned round and suddenly he was on his knee proposing. Even though I had some idea, I was still startled by what was happening. To be honest, I was so shocked I can’t remember if I even said, Yes. Cardiff_Wedding_Photography068 He then took me up to where the bars were and I noticed some familiar faces. Alyn had organised for some of our closest friends to come down and celebrate the engagement with us. We had champagne and a really lovely day in the sunshine.

Any DIY stories/tutorials you’d like to share?

I love my Pom Poms. With our first venue (story below), it was a great big hall and my idea was to create a load of pom poms to hang down around the venue. I had never made them before but found a pin on pinterest on how to make them. They are so easy to make. All you need is some tissue paper, something to tie with and some string. In the end, I didn’t do as many, as my venue turned out to be smaller but definitely brightened up the place and added some colour.332

Pinterest was such a good place to get ideas and inspiration. Definitely recommend.

What was your first dance & why?

Our first dance was Lucky by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat. Me and Alyn were big Glee fans at one point and even went to see there live show once at the O2 area. We first heard this song on Glee. The words both expressed how we felt about each other. Plus it wasn’t a very well known song which we liked. Cardiff_Wedding_Photography098In hindsight, was there anything you would have done differently?

I always said that I wouldn’t speak during the speeches due to tradition and the fact that it is scary! Though I do slightly regret not saying something or having some input into Alyn’s speech. For example, I would have loved to thank everyone personally especially our families. Cardiff_Wedding_Photography087Cardiff_Wedding_Photography142
Do you have any advice for future couples?

Everyone mentioned to us to enjoy the day as it goes so quick and it did! Even though they gave me this advice, I do feel like the day passed me by. So much happens and you have to try and take it all in. Also another bit of advice was to have a few minutes alone with the hubby. Whether with your photographer or take an extra lap with the wedding car.  251Cardiff_Wedding_Photography062280What was your favourite thing about planning a wedding?

Everything! Loved every part! So glad we had that couple of years to have fun in planning the wedding. I had so much fun organising, planning, using my spreadsheets and making my pom poms! Also marrying Alyn Luker! x
