Real Weddings: Allie & Rafe’s Day, Their Way

So its nearly the weekend so we thought we would treat you, as usual, to another beautiful Real Wedding.  This week we give you Allie and Rafe, shot by the wonderful Andrew at Silverbirch Photography. Oooooh its so so lovely! The attention to detail, the venue, her coy smile, those shoes, his tweed, their little boy! I shall stop banging on about it and leave it to you to discover instead.  Over to Allie and Rafe to tell us all about their day……

Real Weddings: Allie & Rafe’s Day, Their Way

What was your budget?

We didn’t really have a set budget in mind. We knew we could only spend what we had so worked with that. We decided what was a need and what was a want then priced everything up. That sounds really boring I know but it really worked for us. Our rule of thumb was ‘does it sound reasonable’, if it did then we went for it. We had all the needs then had a few nice splurges too!

All together I’d say just under £7000 in total.

How would you describe your wedding theme?

The whole thing was perfect from start to end. My favourite part was how relaxed everyone felt. It was a casual laid back day with our closest family and friends. We were able to be ourselves and so were our guests. No pretending and no drama. Rafe was able to perform wuthering heights with the boys, the dance as well as the singing, I over indulged in Jagerbombs and no body batted an eyelid. Our families and friends mingled like they had all known each other for years.

I also loved seeing Rafe and our little boy Dylan dressed in the same outfit. It made my heart melt seeing him in his miniature tweed coat and brogues.

Tell us about your Wedding Dress

I didn’t step foot in a wedding dress shop. It just didn’t appeal to me at all. I knew I didn’t want a traditional dress and I knew trying on dresses in a shop just wasn’t for me. I initially chose a vintage Ivory embroidered full length gown but I just didn’t feel comfortable and didn’t feel like myself. In the end I went for a Chi Chi London lace baroque tea dress from ASOS. It was a bargain but I felt really special in it and more importantly felt like me.

IMG_7793 IMG_7896

I was actually more bothered about my shoes! I didn’t like traditional wedding shoes and knew I wanted something colourful. I found the most amazing burgundy shoes on Mod Cloth and instantly ordered them, they were perfect.

IMG_7803 IMG_8018

Who did you pick as your bridesmaids &/or best man and why?

I chose my two best friends, Bobbie and Becci and my Cousin, Jess. Even though we have spent long periods of time miles apart and sometimes go weeks without talking and months without seeing each other they are three of the most important people to me in the world. It was definitely an easy decision. There’s never any expectations and when we do see each other it’s like no time has passed at all.

IMG_7946 IMG_7950

Rafe chose his two closest friends from when he was a teenager, Brad and Drinkel (Tom). Both live overseas now so it was amazing that they were able to join us for our day.

IMG_7957

Why did you choose your venue?

As soon as we walked into Rosedew Farm we knew we wanted to get married there. It was the only venue we actually looked at. A big old empty barn by the sea. It was just perfect for us.

IMG_7715 IMG_7728

Tell us about your photographer

Our photographer was one of our splurges. I saw his photography on a wedding blog and I fell in love. I love Andrew’s style of photography and photos are really important to me so we contacted him. It was important to us that moments were caught on camera rather than just a posed image. I love our photos so much.

IMG_8032 IMG_8045 IMG_8141

How did the proposal happen?

We were chatting one day about our next travels. We love to travel and usually have our next two trips planned. I was saying to Rafe that I really wanted to go to Japan next year and he said “well can’t we get married instead?”. So that was that and we started planning.

IMG_7747 IMG_8159

Any DIY stories/tutorials you’d like to share?

The whole day was more or less DIY. From the invitations to the centrepieces to the cheesecake. Even the flowers were DIY. My mother in law and I spent many an hour digging in charity shops and antique shops for dream bottles and teapots, and evenings spent tying wooden cutlery and napkins. Rafe and I particularly enjoyed sampling the cheese in the shops before deciding which ones to have. My bridesmaid Becci was chief ‘florist’ and handtied all the bouquets and button holes. I think doing things DIY is more stressful and time consuming however you get to have things exactly as you want (whilst being a lot more cost effective too!). It just made the planning more exciting too as we could see everything coming together.

IMG_8158 IMG_8160 IMG_8165 IMG_8170
IMG_8173

What was your first dance & why?

We didn’t want an announced first dance so we asked the DJ to play our first dance song later in the evening unannounced. We didn’t fancy the awkward sway with everyone watching. We danced to Bob Marley, Could You be Loved at a random point of the evening. It brings back happy memories of traveling around Central America and the Caribbean (then after returning home finding out we were going to have a baby!)

IMG_8059 IMG_8064

In hindsight, was there anything you would have done differently?

I don’t think so. It was perfect.

Do you have any advice for future couples?

Relax and enjoy yourself. You only do it once and it goes so fast. Stop worrying and just enjoy your day. There’s not enough time to sweat the small stuff.

What was your favourite thing about planning a wedding?

CHEESE! I’m not kidding. Cheese shopping was so good. Getting to go around all the cheese shops and deli’s and taste loads of different cheeses before making our selections for our cheese cake.

Cwtch Of The Week: Bethan & Austin’s Monet Cwtch by Maria Farrelly

Todays Cwtch of The Week: Bethan & Austin’s Monet Cwtch, is called exactly that as it is taken from the beautiful wedding that I had the pleasure of photographing in April. Just take a look, it was like we stepped into a Monet painting.

Cwtch of the Week: Bethan & Austin’s Monet Cwtch

Bethan&Austin_Maria Farrelly Photography-6278Image by Maria Farrelly Photography

Welsh Bride Bethan & her groom Austin tied the knot in a beautiful venue called Priors Tithe Barn in Brockworth (just outside Wales).

AS an added bonus, we asked the beautiful Bethan to tell us all about their proposal story because, well, who dissent love a proposal story!? Over to you Bethan……

I always felt bad for Austin whenever he asked me what kind of engagement ring I wanted (for some point way in the future of course!). I never really had an answer, as I had never seen one that I had really, really loved. Well apart from the huge, can’t lift your hand off the table, so sparkly it blinds you, diamonds in the expensive shops no one can afford!

One day we were walking past an antique shop in Cheltenham when I saw the most beautiful ring in the window and commented on how pretty it was. That was all the encouragement Austin needed and he rang up about it the very next day! Austin planned on proposing on our first family holiday together in Dorset with our little boy Dylan. However, when he went to pay for the ring the card was declined as they suspected fraudulent activity! After much begging and pleading with the shop to hold the ring for another week whilst we were away, Austin had to work on plan B.

Austin decided to propose at a meal he had booked for our anniversary at the Hand & Flowers restaurant in Marlow; a Michelin starred restaurant owned by one of my favourite chefs Tom Kerridge. Due to the huge waiting list Austin had booked this surprise a year in advance and thought this would be somewhere really special to propose. It had always been somewhere I had wanted to visit since seeing it on an old episode of Masterchef – which is very ironic given my lack of cooking skills!

After lots of calls and emails to the restaurant, everything was in place for the proposal. We had the most incredible meal I have ever had and when dessert came out, there was a very small box next to mine. Austin then went into his prepared (and very beautiful!) speech before ending by asking me to marry him. Apparently I made lots of random noises for a very long time, but didn’t actually say yes until prompted for an answer! When I finally did, all the staff offered their congratulations and we had a champagne toast before I made several tearful phone calls to family and friends. Although I do still tease Austin that he didn’t actually go down on one knee in the packed restaurant! It was so thoughtful and very special. We even went back there for a celebratory meal one year later, and plan on visiting again after the wedding when we have some more news to celebrate!

Nothing says ‘yes I will marry you’ like a lot of random noises.  We love this!  And you are in for a treat, as I have ready, their whole special day and cannot wait to share the whole wedding with you all very soon.

Enjoy~ Maria xxx

Cwtch Of The Week

It’s Monday….But most of us are having a lovely day off.

Yay!

Today’s Cwtch Of The Week is from the amazing Hepburn Photography.

“It was a pleasure to photograph Nick’s & Lousie’s  wedding.  They were full of smiles and affection and had a fantastic group of family & friends around them adding to the amazing joyful atmosphere of the day.  During the evening celebrations the grooms and his friends serenaded the bride, whist the rest of the guests held back tears yet again!” Nanette Hepburn

This lovely couple got married at Cripps Stone Barn in the Cotswolds. I love the smiles from all of their friend and family but one of the other things I love apart form this being an amazing Cwtch is that there is a couple in in the right of the photograph are also lost in a little cwtch.

If you have a cwtch of the week that you would like to share with us please send it in to info@cwtchthebride.com. I hope you all have a great week. ~ Kate

Lisa And Steve’s DIY Welsh Barn Wedding By Maria Farrelly Photography

We love, love, LOVE a DIY Welsh Barn Wedding here at Cwtch HQ!

Today we are sharing a wedding that I photographed last year. Lisa & Steve, along with all their friends and family rolled their sleeves up and completely DIY’d this working barn for their wedding day. Every bit of detail you see in these pictures was put together by them all. If that wasn’t great enough, every single one of their guests were simply fabulous individuals and I’m a huge believer that your guests can make or break your wedding day. The Ceremony was full of laughter and tears by all, the dance floor was never empty and the photo booth at the end… well, you can see for yourself :)

It was an absolute pleasure to have photographed this wedding and to also work alongside some great wedding suppliers such as Kate Petersen & Holdens Catering.

I’m so thrilled with all the images, especially as I know Lisa & Steve adore them. So… without further a do, lets hand you over to Lisa to tell you all about her wedding. ~ Maria

welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.084How would you describe your wedding theme?

Handmade, everyone pitched in barn wedding.welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.079

What were your favourite parts of your wedding?

The emotional roller coaster that was the service.welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.044 We had a wonderful few days with everyone chipping in to help. welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.074Walking down the aisle with my dad surrounded by everyone we loved, just floored me.welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.040

My step dad officiated, our wonderful Usher, John prepared the most wonderful personal reading and I wouldn’t have made it through the vows with out sobbing, had our badly planned ceremony back drop not provided some light relief & broken the ice. The photos of Steve and I laughing surrounded by streamers are some of my favourite of the day.welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.043

welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.047Tell us about your Wedding Dress

I love a beautiful gown but the idea of spending more on one dress that my entire wardrobe didn’t sit too well with my bargain hunting nature…so it was with a little trepidation that I ventured out dress shopping one spring day with my wonderful bridesmaids in tow.

The dress was by Lusan Mandongus/Anna Sully & was the second one I tried on. I loved it. But in all honesty the trip solidified that spending that much on a dress wasn’t a priority for me…So a few more trips later & a lot of wonderful options explored, I was about to hire a gorgeous alternative when this one appeared on Preloved.welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.003

Picking it up coincided with a work trip up North, a random rondevous in a car park & breaking down in the middle of no where with my sister! There were a few tears when after trying it on I realised I’d been a tad optimistic in the sizing & it wasn’t in perfect condition, but with the help of my mum and a big dollop of patience we cleaned, adjusted and tweaked it back to life!welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.004welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.009

In the end I felt brilliant wearing it & the saving paid for a band..and LOTS of bubbles, totally worth the effort. welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.114

Who did you pick as your bridesmaids &/or best man and why?

Our wedding party was made up of live long friends and people we both love to bits. They were all wonderful, chipping in, making the build up and the whole day so wonderful.welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.077

Surround yourselves with people you love & make you laugh & you cant really go wrong can you!

Why did you choose your venue?

We wanted somewhere we could decorate how we wanted, bring in our own caterers and allowed us to provide our own alcohol…That ruled out a lot. When we meet Mirander & her husband at the farm we knew it was a good match. Over looking the fact it was a working barn in the middle of winter they were so accommodating and nice. We knew it was a winner! welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.033welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.026welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.093

Tell us about your photographer

The AMAZING & super creative genius that is Maria Farrelly. We had met the year before at a Cwtch The Bride event and after spending the day with her at a friends wedding and seeing her wonderful work, no one else could come close!

Maria simply becomes one of the family for the day…The beautiful and natural images she creates is testament to how at ease she makes everyone! I will cherish her pictures for ever!

welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.067

How did the proposal happen?

We were at a BBQ and incredibly drunk sat chatting on a friends sofa! Not a modern day fairy tale exactly, but very heartfelt & looking back very us. Ring shopping the next day was interesting way of warding off a hangover!welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.053

Any DIY stories/tutorials you’d like to share?

A lot was do it yourself with a big helping hand from family and friends. From the cake to the decor, lighting & stationary. I enjoy making things and work in a design industry so this was pretty enjoyable!

The biggest thing we pulled off was probably the flowers, with the exception of my bouquet, my green fingered mum grew & arranged all the flowers! Seeing her garden transform in the months building up to the wedding was exciting! She put so much love & hard work into planning & growing them all…welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.025You need to be the sort of person who can go with the flow a little, as you can’t really be sure what you’ll have to work with till the week of the wedding, but it was a personal touch that really transformed our venue. Its worth mentioning that the peonies came from Aldi…Who are great and if you call in a few days before hand will order in extras for you!

welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.023

In hindsight, was there anything you would have done differently?

Picked a closer hotel. We had visions of staying up all night at a hotel bar chatting over late night drinks..In reality we were exhausted! A comfy bed, minus the hour long coach drive would have been a better idea.welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.129Also don’t stress the small stuff..Not everything will go to plan, but in all honesty you will be in to much of a happy bubble to care…and going off plan might even lead to some wonderful memories (Like our poor wind battered back drop photos!)welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.050

Do you have any advice for future couples?

Prioritise your budget right from the start…and stick to it. Some things really mattered to us & made the decision process a lot easier when we came across a few budget dilemmas…Like falling in love with a venue that was realistically more than we had planned. Some traditional things simply dropped off our list, like cars for example..Meaning we could splash out on a safari honeymoon in Africa!welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.036

What was your favourite thing about planning a wedding?

Seeing the months of work and planning all come together on the day. Take a moment and soak it all in when everyone’s eating or dancing or just chatting…it goes by so fast, but seeing everyone happy and there to celebrate with you is great!welsh_barn_cwtch_wedding.056
