It might be our second Sarah & Grant but it’s our first destination wedding for you all today! :) Shot by Welsh wedding photographer Lloyd Williams, Sarah & Grant decided to get married in a small, intimate ceremony in Italy. How gorgeous is that backdrop?
We asked them to give us the low down on their big day :)
What was your budget? We didn’t have a set budget, but at the same time didn’t want to spend too much on our wedding day. The good thing about it being abroad is that it was our holiday too!
How would you describe your wedding theme? Our wedding theme was simple, fresh with an italian and vintage twist! The setting was so beautiful so we really wanted to keep any decoration simple because the backdrop was breath taking on its own.
What was your favourite part of your wedding? The favourite part of our wedding day has to be getting married at the beautiful castle perched on a cliff overhanging the lake surrounded by our special friends and family. However, the day just seemed to get better and better, the Tuk tuk ride through the windy cobbled streets was so much fun, equally the boat ride with our guests and the reception at La Voglia. The highlight of the evening for us both has to be when we decided to jump in the lake at the end of the night with some of our guests! (editors note: I wish we had photos of that! :D )
Who did you pick as your bridesmaids &/or best man and why? It was really easy choosing our bridesmaids, our two best friends Hannah and Jess have been my rock over the past few years. Equally we wanted both our sisters Nadia and Claire to be part of our special day.
We had two best men; Carter and Ian. they were both close friends of Grant since they were young. The best men were incredible on the day and delivered a great double act speech! Darcey Belle was our beautiful flower girl and Morgan our nephew was our page boy. We also had our cousin Moritz as our ring bearer. Everyone did such an amazing job and we were thrilled that they could all be part of our special day.
Why did you choose your venue? We always had an idea that we would want to go abroad and have a relatively small wedding ceremony and, having always loved Italian food and always wanted to go there together, we thought this might be an ideal location. We discovered Lake Garda weddings after some online research. We literally did not have much idea of what specifically we wanted but this was all catered for by the team.
We were not disappointed when we visited that May with my parents it was a million times better than we had ever imagined. For some university friends it was just as easy to travel to Italy as it would have been to travel to Cardiff. Most of our guests made the trip their holiday too.
How did the proposal happen? The proposal was certainly not planned, it was a whirlwind idea for Grant. We were in New York and decided to do some last minute shopping after our visit to Central Park and before our flight later in the afternoon. We stumbled across Tiffany’s covered in pretty fairy lights and walked in with no intention of purchasing anything. We went up in the elevator and walked out on the wrong floor (surrounded in diamond rings) we took a quick look around and then went back to the elevator to go to the next floor.
Before that I popped to the bathroom and when I came out Grant was no longer there. I tried ringing him and he was engaged so I went up and down in the elevator looking for him. 15 minutes had passed and I started to panic a) because I couldn’t find Grant and b) because I was conscious of the time as we were being picked up from the hotel in an hours time. Finally, I caught a glimpse of Grant sat opposite a member of staff purchasing something. I was relieved to find him and did not think for a minute he was purchasing an engagement ring. He was red and flustered and didn’t say much at all, there were two glasses of champagne which then made me think has he bought a….????
But he didn’t say what he had purchased and then said cheers and drank the champagne with me (I still didn’t know what was going on.) As we left Tiffany’s we realised we were extremely late and ran as fast as we could to get back to the hotel, within 5 minutes of running Grant said…”I can’t handle the suspense any further” and got down on one knee and asked to marry me. I was so shocked and think deep down Grant was too. I said yes and then continued to run for our lives for the shuttle bus back to the airport!
He later told me that he hadn’t planned the proposal and that it was a last minute decision which he just felt was right and the perfect end to the New Year’s break in New York. I later discovered that the decision to purchase the ring rested on whether my dad would answer the phone when Grant rang him from Tiffany’s to ask for his permission, which is why he was engaged when I was trying to ring him. It was the perfect end to our wonderful holiday!
Any DIY stories/tutorials you’d like to share? We made the table decorations two days before the wedding by the pool in the sweltering heat, this was very last minute but nothing different for us. I even collected my wedding dress the day were flying to Italy!
What was your first dance? Our first dance was by Train ‘Drops of Jupiter’
In hindsight, was there anything you would have done differently? Ummm been a little more organised but that is it really! Oh and not to leave my veil and head piece at the hairdressers and only realise when I got down the aisle!
Do you have any advice for future couples? Just enjoy the whole process the preparation and the BIG day, it all goes so fast!
What’s the best piece of marriage advice you received? Make sure we have two minutes aside together to take the whole day in.
What was your favourite thing about planning a wedding? For me this was probably choosing a wedding dress (but not the second time after the shop went into liquidation) and visiting Malcesine to plan everything a year before the wedding. I must admit it was so easy to plan as we were in the best hands ever with Lake Garda Weddings.
