We’ve got another fantastic featured vendor today – it’s Quil from Love & Lovelier! :) She makes ceramic lovespoons, brooches, ring dishes and other wedding accessories. We had an interview with her to find out more about her business…
Tell us a little bit about yourself :)
My name is Aquila (but I prefer Quil), I’m 34, and mum to two little girls. We live in Llantwit Fardre. Originally I’m from Watford (just north of London) but we moved to Wales to be closer to my husband’s family. I studied Mixed Media Art at University, but clay found me later in life. I have a slight obsession with words, fonts and colour.
How long have you been running Love & Lovelier? What made you decide to start?
I started L&L about two years ago. It was born from a disaster (and I’m not using the term lightly!) In 2010 my oldest daughter was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis, a horrible, incurable, life-limiting, genetic disease. I was pregnant with my second daughter at the time, and there was a 1 in 4 chance that she too would have CF. As it turned out, she does. When my maternity leave came to its natural end (I worked for the NHS), I decided that I needed to be home with the girls more and be available for all the clinic and hospital appointments, so I never went back to the desk job. Life was really hard at the time, and after about a year I started going to an evening ceramic class just to have a couple hours off. I soon realised that I might be able to make something really special, and Love & Lovelier was born.
What does Love & Lovelier offer?
I make ceramic love-spoons, ceramic postcards, brooches and ring dishes – all with vibrant colours and wording. I can customise any piece to include your names, dates, lines from songs… anything really!
What’s your favourite thing about your job?
Being part of someone’s special day. I get emails from people who have bought a piece from me, saying it made the person they gave it to cry, and that they will treasure it forever. You can’t get better than that!
What can your clients expect from you?
Something no-one else has got, and it will be a talking point. I will discuss any custom requests fully, so it’s perfect. It takes me about two weeks to make a piece from scratch because the clay needs to be fired twice.
What’s your price range?
What makes you different to other accessory businesses?
No-one else makes what I make. I am completely unique. Everything can be customised, and it all will last forever, just like your memories.
What’s your favourite thing about working in Wales?
The people! Where I come from people do not talk to strangers. It took me a couple of years to get used to it here because everyone stops to chat!
Which of your products is your favourite?
My ‘Today is Amazing’ ring dish. It is in my favourite colours and reminds me every day is amazing, to count my blessings, and not get swept away on a tide of worries and gripes.
& you might remember seeing some of Quil’s work in Sarah’s wedding post…
