Our first DIY wedding hair tutorial post is a collaboration with another of our featured vendors, the wonderful Kate Petersen. This hairstyle is great as it’ll work on most lengths of hair, from just above shoulder length to really long – and is much easier to recreate than it looks! Photos shot by Maria Farrelly, hairstyled modeled by our very own DIY bride, Sarah!
- Bobby pins
- Hair spray
- Hair brush for backcombing
- Rollers for volume
- Straighteners / curling iron
Step by Step
Step 1: Use heated rollers to get a curl and volume in the hair.
Optional: make a face at how Vera Duckworth you look right now.
Step 2: Once cool take them out and then run your fingers through your hair.
Optional: Marvel at your 60s messy curls, pretend to be a starlet for 3 minutes.
Step 3: Backcomb the top to create height!
Optional: reenact the scene from There’s Something About Mary.
Step 4: Smooth and Spray.
Step 5: Secure the top section with bobby pins.
Step 6: Backcomb the rest of the hair giving it volume. Leaving the front smooth.
Step 7: Spray so that it will stay!
Step 8: Pin the hair up around the nape of the neck and behind the ear.
Step 9: Leaving a few bits down to soften the front, twist the section over the ear.
Step 10: Secure it over the bobby pins that secure the top section. repeat till it is all up.
Step 12: Repeat on the other side.
Step 13: Curl the sections that you left out. Ta Daaaaa! Spray again to be on the safe side.
Step 14: Accessorise with something pretty.
A: Leave your hair after step 4 and strut your funky stuff. Perfect for a vintage themed wedding if you want volume without the fuss :)
B: Half up-do with curls. Stop after step 5 for this relaxed but fun hairstyle. Perfect if you want a bit of glam but would like to keep the length. If you’re hair is longer you can run some loose curls through the bottom section to give it some more style.
Thanks Kate! We’ve got two more tutorials to show from our morning with Kate so look out for those coming up soon on the blog. We’d love to see photos if anyone tries this style! :)
